애틀랜타 한인 커뮤니티의 정치적 잠재성을 확연히 보여주었던 연방하원 조지아 7지구 민주당 경선이 이제 모두 마무리 되었습니다. 투표자 억압, 인신공격, 인종차별, 한인 커뮤니티 욕보기 등 온갖 난관 속에서도 한인들은 똘똘뭉쳐 새로운 역사를 써내려갔습니다.

Hold All the Aces는 "절대적인 유리한 입장에 있다 / 주도권을 선점해 있다/ 온갖 좋은 것들은 다 갖고 있다"라는 뜻으로 유사표현은 "hold all the cards"입니다. 예문은 "They hold all the aces; they are the champions, the best team in the country, and have a full-time manager. 그들이 온갖 좋은 것들은 다 갖고 있지; 챔피언이지, 전국에서 최고팀이지, 상근 매니저도 있잖아."

 

그럼, Hold All the Aces를 지난 7월24일 결선투표에서 석패한 데이빗 김 후보 캠페인 상황 속에서 살펴보겠습니다:

 

Lee: It’s a real shame that David Kim didn’t win the run-off election. (데이빗 김이 결선투표에서 낙선한게 진짜 아쉽네.)

Choi: You said it. He and his campaign parties involved were really committed to the campaign. They canvassed from door to door going to over 10,000 households. (내말이. 김후보랑 캠페인 관계자들이 진짜 열심히 캠페인에 임했는데. 가가호호 유세를 무려 1만 가구나 진행했는데 말야.)

Lee: What about the Korean community? They also supported him tremendously and engaged in the campaign by sticking together. (한인 커뮤니티는 또 어떻고? 엄청나게 김후보를 지지했고 똘똘 뭉쳐서 캠페인에 참여했잖아.)

Choi: I agree with you 100%. They were amazing. They gave him their all within their power. (너말에 100% 동감해. 한인들 정말 대단해. 할 수 있는 한도내에서 김 후보를 위해 할 수 있는 모든 것을 다 했지.)

Lee: Now, the Democrat-elect is supposed to confront the Republican incumbent in Georgia’s Congressional 7^th district this November. Do you think the Democrat-elect can make it to the D.C. Capitol? (이젠, 민주당 당선자가 이번 11월에 조지아 제7지구 공화당 현직의원과 맞대결을 펼치겠네. 너 생각엔 민주당 당선자가 워싱턴 국회에 입성할 수 있을거라 보니?)

Choi: Fat chance! The Republican Party holds all the aces in Georgia, you know. (가능성이 희박하지. 조지아에선 공화당이 절대적인 유리한 입장에 있잖아, 너도 알다시피.)
