최근 사우스캐롤라이나주에서 열차 충돌 사고가 발생해 최소 2명이 숨지고 116명이 다쳤습니다. 뉴욕에서 마이애미로 가던 '암트랙 열차 91'이 사우스 캐롤라이나주 케이스에서 CSX 화물열차와 충돌한 것입니다. 911 구조대가 급파되고 부상자들 병원 이송이 분초를 다투며 바삐 진행됐습니다.

Against the Clock은 “일분일초 시각을 다투며”라는 뜻으로 해당 구문 앞에 주로 work 혹은 race가 위치합니다. 예문은 “It was a race against the clock for the 911 staff to rush the terror victims to the nearest hospital. 분초를 다투며 911 구조대팀이 테러 희생자들을 긴급히 인근 병원으로 이송시켰다.” / “I have to work against the clock to finish my presentation in time for the critical meeting. 중대한 미팅을 위한 프레즌테이션을 제시간에 마쳐야 해서 일분일초가 급해.”입니다.

 

그럼, Against the Clock을 티파니 목걸이를 주문했으나 반지가 배달온 상황 속에서 살펴보겠습니다:

Customer: I’d like to, but I’m working against the clock at work to get through these important documents for my clients by 6:00pm tomorrow. The nearest store usually closes at 6pm and I have to be chained to the desk before I get it done, which means there is no time for me to get there before they close. (그러고 싶지만, 내일 오후 6시까지 의뢰인의 중요한 서류들을 다 끝내기 위해 분초를 다투며 일하고 있어요. 근데 인근 상점은 통상 6시에 문을 닫고 나 역시 일을 끝내기 전까진 책상에 꼼짝을 않고 있어야 해요. 즉, 상점 문닫기전에 들를 시간이 없다는 말이죠.)

Associate: No sweat! Let me get in touch with the closest store and tell them to be on the lookout for you past business hours. They'll have the item ready and waiting for your arrival. (괜찮습니다! 제가 인근 상점에 연락해서 영업시간 지나서도 고객님이 오시는 걸 봐달라고 말해둘께요. 고객님이 도착하시길 기다리며 직원들이 해당 물건을 준비해 놓을 것입니다.)
