The clamor for manicures shows no signs of waning, and the number of nail bars has doubled in just two years.
According to the Korean Nail Technicians Association, there were 6,000 nail bars in Korea in 2015, but the number shot up to 12,000 last year.
The nail care and nail art industry is estimated to be worth W300 billion a year and employs 100,000 people (US$1=W1,121).
In a recession, relatively inexpensive makeup products such as a lipstick often become popular as they can make a big difference without costing a fortune. That clearly applies to nail care.
An increasing number of men are also getting their nails done. They mostly get a basic manicure that involves shaping the nails and getting cuticles trimmed and calluses removed. But more and more men visit nail bars for more delicate and creative procedures.
