K-Pop star Jung Joon Young and former F.T. Island member Choi Jong Hoon will spend 6 years and 5 years respectively behind bars. Both singers were convicted of committing quasi-raping, which refers to multiple parties conspiring to have illicit sexual intercourse with someone who was unconscious or unable to resist.
Jung was also convicted of illicitly filming and distributing footage of the assaults via online chat groups. He shared spycam video clips of women filmed without their knowledge with other celebs on Korean messaging app Kakao Talk, which former Big Bang member Seung Ri participated in.
Jung and Choi were ordered to undergo 80 hours of sexual violence rehabilitation and will not be able to work with children, juveniles, or the disabled for five years. Kwon Hyuk Jun, Girls’ Generation’s Yuri’s older brother, received four years. He was sentenced to 3 years of probation after the jail time due to his record with regards to sex offence.
The trials have been held in private to protect the victims of the case.
“We can’t imagine the pain that the victims might have felt who had found out later. Jung seemed to view his victims as a tool for pleasure,” said the Judge Kang Seung Soo, the Seoul Central District Court.
Jung said in his final testimony that he was sorry for his actions. He quit his music career in March after he was implicated.
“I deeply regret my foolishness and I feel great remorse,“ said Jung, “From now on, I shall only live in remorse.” Jung was acquitted on a separate sexual assault charge at the same trial.
Early this year, the victim said in a cable show, “I had blacked out after drinking with some men. When I came around and asked the accomplices, “What’s going on?” they said, “You don’t remember? and they laughed.”
It is reported that Jung and Choi gang-raped the victim back in March 2016 in Daegu. While they were raping the victim, others filmed the scene and subsequently raped the victim. These sex offenders exchanged the messages on Kakao Talk: “Poor 00(the victim),” “00 was almost like a comfort woman,” “She was a legend,” “I drugged her and went back and forth from a to v, then finished in her mouth,” “Don’t spill the beans. It is going to end my entire career.”
Their hideous hidden crimes have been revealed in court and their careers as entertainers have been closed in the book.
This case made online users shake their heads in disgust.
“Utterly vile. I don’t want to see anyone sticking up for any of the men in that group chat anymore. You can say they did not partake in the same actions as Jung and Choi, but they knew what was going on. They knew. They read those messages,” said an online user.
