Korean celeb entertainer Goo Ha Ra, a former member of the K-Pop girl group KARA, has passed away at the age of 28. The cause of her death is currently unclear. The police has not yet made an official announcement about her death, nor have they confirmed if Goo died by suicide. An investigation is currently underway.
As Goo is not affiliated with any Korean agencies and signed a new contract with a leading entertainment agency, Production Ogi, in Japan last June, the Japanese production relayed a statement to 8D Creative, a Korean entertainment agency: “We are here to deliver tragic and unfortunate news. Family members and friends of Goo Ha Ra are deeply shocked and anxious at the moment. Therefore, we earnestly request that the media and fans refrain from writing speculative articles and spreading rumors.”
The omen of Goo’s death flashes back to last May. Back then, it is known that Goo attempted suicide after Choi Jong Bum, her ex-boyfriend, threatened to ruin her career by releasing a sex tape of their time together. Eventually, he was sentenced one year and six months in prison and three years of probation. While sentencing in court, Judge Oh stated: “Mr. Choi was the first to initiate the breakup. He went to the victim’s house, drunk, and woke her up. He vented his anger on her before the situation severely turned into a violent physical fight. Goo was injured from the violence that surpassed what could be called self-defense.
The case made her the subject of tabloids and malicious online messages. The pressure of the endless publicity must have suffocated the 28-year-old, and it seemed that it was difficult to overcome the depression ensuing from cyber bullying. She desperately begged trolls for positive comments on social media. However, the non-stop cyber attacks towards Good resulted in her death.
In 2008, Goo Ha Ra debuted as a member of KARA, which was one of the early girl groups that kicked up the global K-Pop craze, building large fan bases in Japan, China, and other countries. Later Goo began promoting as a solo artist in Korea and Japan.
