Produce X 101 trainees take on the position evaluation mission in episode 6.
By Anna Kim
The top 60 contestants on the show Produce X 101 were announced in last week’s episode and all other trainees packed up their things, eliminated. This show features the trainees vying for a spot in a 11-member boy group, which will promote together for 5 years. In the June 7 episode, the survivors come to take on their next task: the position evaluation.
Hosted by the actor Lee Dong Wook, the show revealed the songs that the trainees will be performing for the evaluation. In addition to the vocal, dance, and rap positions this year, two “X” position songs have been added, which center on either dance and rap or dance and vocal positions. The position evaluation songs are: *Vocal position=Paul Kim’s “Me After You,” MAMAMOO member Hwasa’s “Twit,” BOL4’s “To My Youth,” Wanna One’s “Day by Day” *Rap position=Block B member Zico’s “Yes or No” featuring Penomeco and The Quiett, HAON and VINXEN’s “Barcode” *Dance position=Imagine Dragons’ “Beliver,” Bruno Mars’ “Finesse” featuring Cardi B, Jason Derulo’s “Swalla” featring Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla Sign *”X” position=Charlie Puth’s “Attention(dance and vocal),” Ja Mezz, Andup, and WINNER member Song Mino’s “Turtle Ship” featuring Paloalto(dance and rap).
In a new preview clip, Lee Dong Wook introduces the rules for the mission and explains that they have added an additional position category: an “X” category that involves trainees having to do either both dance and rap or vocal and rap unlike in previous years.
The host Lee Dong Wook explains how the show plays out the rules in sneak preview.
“This is the position evaluation that will determine who survives and who is eliminated. This is completely an individual competition.” said Lee Dong Wook. “If they choose the dance and rap “X” song, they will have to both create choreography and write rap lyrics. Trainees who choose the dance and vocal “X” song will have to arrange the song in addition to coming up with the choreography.”
The two “X” songs are described as “High risk high reward,” because trainees’ benefit points will be doubled if they take on those songs. All the members of the winning “X” team will receive 200,000 benefit points.
Shots of several of the contestants on stage are shown, revealing their looks and concepts for their performances. The trainees look nervous as they consider whether they should go for the extra challenge or take a safer route by going with a song that only focuses on one position.
As the old saying goes, “Failure is but the threshold of success,” those who didn’t make the cut on the show Produce X 101 will find something valuable from their setback. The trainees eliminated from the show shared letters about their experience. Kim Dong Kyu said, “It’s only been a couple of months since I became a trainee, so “Produce X 101” was a dreamlike place for me. I gained strength and became more eager for my dream. I’ll work harder in the future so that I can perform in front of the National Producers.”
