As Seungri, the ex-idol member of Big Bang, has been accused of many crimes including providing sexual escort services to business partners/investors, illegal gambling, and the suspicion of tax evasion, YG Entertainment is in the hot seat and faces the consequences.
Shareholders of YG Entertainment and civic groups are threatening to sue Yang Hyun Suk. In particular, the shareholders want compensation for the losses incurred by the Seungri’s scandal. Massive international conglomerates have pulled their investment from YG following the outbreak of the scandal and they have been demanding compensation from Yang Hyun Suk. It is said that YG Entertainment has lost just over $48.5 million in investments and the stocks of the shareholders have plummeted in value by over 25% since Seungri’s scandal was disclosed last January.
Measures for People’s Livelihoods, a civic group, also took the head to file a complaint with the Seoul Central District Prosecutor’s Office against Yang Hyun Suk for negligence involving the scandal. The group stated, “A public figure who exerts great influence in society shouldn’t be protected when they lack ethics and morality. Companies have been continuously denying involvement in the event of inappropriate remarks and deviant acts made by celebrities. We need to make it clear that the company is also responsible."
As the suspicion of YG Entertainment’s involvement in the scandal gets bigger, netizens keep tabs on what is going on in the company.
Is it just a coincidence that YG Entertainment called in two massive document shredding dump trucks in front of their building on Feb. 28th? Yang Hyun Suk responded to the accusation with the statement, “I think the wrong information has been going around. I had to check it out because I was curious. It is a periodic procedure that is conducted every 3 months every year. Normally, our employees are notified about it ten days before. I hope this helps clear the wrong information going around.”
However, netizens still raise their eyebrows regarding the paper shredding, saying, “The timing of the scheduled cleanup was suspiciously perfect, so the documents that YG Entertainment were terminating should be investigated as well. Netizens also call for Big Bang to disband, citing every member, except Tae Yang, has been involved in many different scandals including G-Dragon and T.O.P’s drug accusations and Daesung’s car accident that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist.
In particular, Seungri has to face the music if the chat from April 2016 was not fabricated. It revealed that Seungri was in cahoots with Yu In Suk, husband of the drama star Park Han Beol and CEO of Yuri Holdings, under which Seungri’s Burning Sun night club in Seoul falls. They allegedly got their VIP clients prostitutes to service them according to the chat on Kakao Talk, where Seungri said, “How about girls? Pick the ones that will sleep with them without a fuss.” Yu replied, “I’m preparing the prostitutes, so when the two of them come, Kim(third party), you take care of them and get them to hotel rooms. Two is enough, right?” The Kakao chat garnered public outrage due to their crass remarks and purportedly illegal acts.
Meanwhile, Seungri’s military enlistment has been pushed back from March 25th due to the ongoing investigations toward him as a suspect. In a somber and serious tone, Seungri made the following statement upon exiting the police station, “I apologize to the people that have been hurt through this case. As of today, I plant to officially make a request to the Military Manpower Administration for a deferment to my military enlistment and will faithfully cooperate with the investigations until the end.”
