The Melon Music Awards first round of voting for the 2018 Top 10 Award took place October 26ththrough November 13th. The 40 nominees were chosen and their eligibility was based on a music release between December 2nd, 2017 and October 25th, 2018. The nominees were evaluated with the number of downloads and streams including the weekly Melon Popularity Award votes earned by each artist.
The finalists are BTS, MAMAMOO, Bolbbalgan4, BTOB, Apink, BLACKPINK, EXO, iKon, TWICE, and Wanna One. These winners will be awarded at the 2018 Melon Music Awards on December 1st at Gocheok Sky Dome.
Among the awardees, BTS made the big time in the K-Pop scene for the last two consecutive years. The group was elevated into megastardom and has been the compelling taste of K-Pop since Psy’s viral 2012 hit, “Gangnam Style” for most American viewers. Their 2017 EP Love Yourself: Her has now spent 27 weeks on the Billboard 200-the first K-pop group ever to do so. Sound, lyrics, and rendition became a cornerstone for this group to gain a worldwide popularity including meticulously crafted narratives to create an interactive experience for fans, alias ARMY, on social media.
The five-member girl group Red Velvet is known for making both pop and, unusually, R&B-inspired jams, deviating from most of their counterparts. Their slinky soul sound has attracted a primarily female fanbase. Red Velvet, consisting of Irene, Yeri, Joy, Wendy, and Seulgi, became one of the five idol groups to perform in North Korea as part of a diplomatic initiative between the two Koreas this year. Simply put, this group has reached a milestone in the K-pop scene with diverse music styles and catchy lead singles like Ice Cream Cake, Red Flavour, Peek-A-Boo, and Bad Boy since starting out as rookies in 2014. Literally, the girls’ power powers up the K-pop fandom!
